In this novel, Rashida, an Indian Muslim woman with a questing spirit, falls in love with an author whose work she admires, sight unseen.  During years of turmoil in India, his fate is unknown, but Rashida refuses other suitors.  When he appears at last, she marries him, and gets her first glimpse of him on their wedding night.  He proves to be repulsive, egotistical, and ultimately treacherous, throwing her emotions and her family's fortunes into chaos.  She begins an affair with a young teacher, threatening her family's honor.  But is he the one, or will he break her heart as well?  Rashida's story unfolds against a backdrop of Indian history, and reveals a world of culture and tradition, some in transition and some unchanging.
